“Strategic assessment is an essential element of the strategy of formulation process. The aim of strategy assessment is to take stock of the current business situation with a view to realizing the strategic intent. Strategic assessments tend to be carried out formally in response to some clear trigger which may be poor performance or the arrival of a new chief executive.”(Hugh Macmillan, 2000, P81)
Strategic assessment requires an understanding of the external business environment, internal resources, capabilities, and culture. The purpose of the external analysis is to know what affect strategic capability could be deployed to grasp an opportunity or minimise a potential threat. So the external analysis is often includes: general changes in the business environment; change within the industry; known activities of immediate competitors and other specific events. On the other hand, the target of internal analysis is to identify the overall situation in the organisation. Therefore, it needs to accomplish the physical, financial and human resources. In the assignment, I will research the Marks and Spencer’s with the External and internal analysis.
